With its original name of Molinos de la Torre (the mills of the tower), Torremolinos came into being when the Catholic kings and their vast number of troops camped there in 1498 during the siege of Malaga. In 1502 it came under the rule of Malaga and eventually evolved as a thriving centre for fishing, primarily centred around an area east of the town called La Carihuela. This is an area where some of the original cottages covered in bougainvillea still exist and the men of the village sit outside playing dominoes and drinking anis. Some of the best seafood restaurants are still found here today. With its numerous pubic gardens, more than one thousand species of plants and trees have been planted in the town ranging from magnolias and banana tress to roses and azaleas. On the outskirts of town are three forests with freshwater springs and barbecue facilities for general use. Just 7km west of Malaga International Airport, it was the first Costa del Sol resort to be developed in the early sixties when it was little more than a fishing village. Now with its exclusive boutiques and gift shops along the smartly paved pedestrian streets, wide choice of hotels and restaurants and huge variety of entertainment and night life, it has evolved as an appealing resort. Off season it takes on a very different character, with the atmosphere becoming much more traditional and Spanish. The Cuesta del Tajo at the end of the pedestrian area leads down a steep flight of steps through to the old fishing district and beach of El Bajondillo. This is a very pretty area lined with restaurants and stalls selling souvenirs. The Marina is located at the centre of the seafront promenade. To increase the number of moorings it has been constructed with a number of small islands linked by bridges that you can wander around at your leisure. Late at night the disco bars provide one of the liveliest spots on the coast.
