The municipality of Mijas, in the heart of the western Costa del Sol and only 30 km. from Malaga international airport and 30 km. from the capital city of the province, stretches from the sierra of the same name to the sea, across a landscape of mountains and hills. Mijas is one of the most extensive districts in the province of Málaga, measuring 149 km2. It is divided into three town centres: Mijas Pueblo, in the sierra, has all the charm of a typical Andalusian white village, Las Lagunas, in Mijas Costa, is the most modern part of the municipality, where the industrial and commercial area is to be found, and La Cala, a coastal area and the centre of the 12 km. of coast which run through the district. Mijas Pueblo has an altitude of 428 metres above sea level. Las Lagunas and La Cala are located on the coast. Geographically speaking, the greater part of the town is mountainous land, with increasing growth on the slopes leading towards the sea. The area is crossed by two rivers, Las Pasadas and El Ojén, which join to form the Fuengirola River, flowing into the boundary between the two towns. Bathed by the Mediterranean, it borders on the towns of Fuengirola, Benalmádena, Alhaurín de la Torre, Alhaurín el Grande, Marbella, Ojén and Coín. |
